DIY Shea Butter Deep Conditioner

Healthy hair is what we desire but we have to take care of it to achieve it. Weekly deep conditioning is important to retain length, strengthen elasticity, reduce split ends, and moisturize. So I made up my own DIY Shea butter deep conditioner using simple ingredients I already have in my house. You can do this too and if there’s an ingredient you’re missing, you may replace it with another similar to it. However, make sure you do your research and check out the benefits to make sure it makes sense to what you want to achieve with your hair.

Shea butter is the main ingredient to this deep conditioner because it’s a natural conditioner providing moisture to dry and damaged hair. It relieves itchy scalp and alleviates dandruff and scalp issues. It softens your hair and doesn’t cause build up. 

Honey and glycerine are natural humectants and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Goat’s milk and coconut milk is good for dry scalp and softens hair. Prevents breakage and moisturizes.

Coconut oil is a protectant of the hair shaft and improves overall hair health.

Castor oil stimulates the scalp and increases hair growth.

Grapeseed oil gives hair shine and is high in vitamin E.

Tea tree oil unclogs hair follicles and nourishes your roots.

Peppermint essential oil treats the scalp and promotes hair growth.

Here’s what you’ll need for DIY Shea Butter Deep Conditioner:

Equipment

  • Electric mixer/blender
  • Medium mixing bowl
  • Double boiler
  • Tablespoon

Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp Shea butter
  • 1 Tbsp Honey or vegetable glycerine
  • 1 Tbsp Goat’s milk or Coconut milk
  • 1 Tbsp Coconut oil
  • 1 Tbsp Castor oil 
  • 1 Tbsp Grapeseed oil or Olive oil
  • 3-5 drops Tea tree oil
  • 3-5 drops of Peppermint essential oil

 

Directions

  1. Boil about 2 cups of water in a medium saucepan. 
  2. Add Shea butter to a glass bowl or container and place in the hot water until it melts (alternatively you can microwave but watch carefully. I’ve always used a double boiler). 
  3. Remove liquid Shea butter from the saucepan.
  4. Slowly stir in the honey, milk, and oils into the Shea butter. 
  5. Place bowl into the refrigerator for about 20 minutes or until the mixture starts to solidify.
  6. Add peppermint essential oil. 
  7. Use an electric blender to whisk the conditioner until completely smooth. 
  8. Add conditioner to a container to use for later or use right away directly from the bowl.

Use on hair

Apply the conditioner to dry hair if using as a pre-poo treatment or to wet hair if using after a wash. Start with the scalp and spread down to the roots. Massage it into the scalp well. Cover head with a plastic cap and a towel or tshirt over it to lock in the natural heat from your head for about an hour. If sitting under a dryer, leave on for 15-20 mins. Rinse out well making sure to massage the scalp for any residue.
